In the search for roots in the ancestors of electronic wind instruments, more than 60 patent documents were analysed, numerous advertising brochures and operating instructions were evaluated, and previously unpublished archives of the Hohner company from Ernst Zacharias' workshop were processed. The result is a history of development illustrated with over 70 figures, from the first electroacoustic aerophones (harmonies and wind instruments with built-in pickups) to the development of the wind synthesizers with electronic wind sensors. Particular attention was paid to the development of the first commercially available electronic wind instrument: the Electra-Melodica, built in 1967.
