The technical development of the sound recording initially pursued the ideal of transmitting and reproducing music in the highest possible
quality and true to nature. In the recording studios of today's popular music, however, a different maxim is being followed: sound effects, the search for original sounds and innovative electronic processes are the focus of production work.
The Beatles played a decisive role in this development. Whereas their recording technique of the first record productions was still based on their live concerts, they later produced numerous sophisticated titles in the Abbey Road studios with state-of-the-art technology and innovative methods – titles they could not or chose not to perform live any more.
Selected productions of the Beatles demonstrate chronologically how the musicians' and consumers' different sound ideals and the development of studio technology influenced each other and had a musical impact
