Why are Chopin’s original pedal indications so often ignored? Through a detailed study of the pertinent secondary literature and compositions known to Chopin by the most important composers of the style brillant era, such as Dussek, Hummel, Field, Moscheles, and Kalkbrenner, it is shown how Chopin’s concept of pedalling was markedly influenced by the aesthetics of the preceding generation. Contrary to claims made by many later writers and pianists, Chopin’s original pedal indications are demonstrated to be logical and consistent when placed in their correct historical context, and should be seen as a development and refinement of the pedalling concepts of previous composers, as Chopin adapted it to his new and revolutionary piano textures.
