Why are Chopin’s original pedal indications so often ignored? Through a detailed study of the pertinent secondary literature and compositions known to Chopin by the most important composers of the style brillant era, such as Dussek, Hummel, Field, Moscheles, and Kalkbrenner, it is shown how Chopin’s concept of pedalling was markedly influenced by the aesthetics of the preceding generation.
